A Health Instructor Instructs Her Students About The Importance Of Alcoholism Signs
Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the largest parochial high school in the local community. Even though she had been teaching for only three of four years, she had already gained a reputation as a person with teaching methods that inspired and encouraged pupils to think and to learn.
For example, one Tuesday morning at 10:30 she addressed the pupils in her classroom and said the following: "For the next two or three days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a general perspective and we are also going to learn about several of the most basic signs of alcoholism from a less general and more detailed point of view."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will undeniably reveal that a drinker with a drinking problem is an individual who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that a person exhibits, the greater the likelihood that he or she is an individual who is alcohol dependent."
Miss Jackson then told the members of the class that each pupil would be responsible for researching two alcoholism signs and then presenting his or her conclusions to the class via a eight minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a piece of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked her students to go over the list and rank the top five alcohol addiction signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After about twenty minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and told the students in her class that after she reviews the numbers, she will present her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson told the pupils in her class to go over the information she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, concerns, or issues. Within 30 or 40 seconds, almost every pupil in the class raised his or her hand. It was obvious that the pupils had some issues, concerns, or questions about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For instance, almost every student had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism experts, that is to say, "Do you feel awfully sick when you refrain from drinking?"
Miss Jackson then told her students why this answer was the most straightforward sign of alcohol dependency. She pointed out that the main difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcohol dependency and not with alcohol abuse.
Essentially this means that when an individual who is addicted to alcohol suddenly quits drinking, she or he will experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the significance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcohol dependent person, the pupils started to understand the fundamental difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
A few minutes later the bell rang, meaning that the end of class had arrived. Based on the excitement exhibited by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson realized that she had inspired and stimulated her students to stop and think about an important health issue and social problem that exists in our country.
