A Troubled High School Student Displays Several Alcohol-Related Issues, Gets Discharged From School, And Has To See The School Therapist

Stephen was a eighteen year old high school senior who was manifesting more than a few alcohol-related problems at school. Therefore, the principal told him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school counselor, before he would be permitted to come back to class.

Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to go over his school situation with his Mother and Father. His Mom and Dad were "fairly conservative" and told Stephen that getting thrown out of school was not a practical educational option. They told Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would likely be like a lead weight around his ankles that could conceivably mar his educational achievement for the remainder of his life. In addition, Stephen's parents were quite dismayed that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his buddies in the second.

It was plain to see that his Mom and Dad were absolutely in accord with Stephen's principal and explained to Stephen that he had better come to the realization that he needs to see Miss Pender, the school psychologist. After his talk with his parents, Stephen eventually agreed to see Miss Pender the next school day. So Stephen phoned the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during his sixth period class.

When Stephen arrived at his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she instantaneously went over all of the alcohol-related difficulties Stephen had experienced and asked him if he understood why his recent alcohol-related behavior gave the school administrators room for alarm.

Quite candidly, Stephen wondered why the principal explained to him that he had to see a school counselor. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional counselor about his drinking situation? Since nearly all of his buddies drink the same amount that he does, basically, drinking shouldn't be such a big issue. Stated more explicitly, if almost everyone is drinking, why is this such a major issue?

In a word, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was beginning to foil his ability to behave like an accountable young man. As articulated by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your peers drink hard liquor, beer, wine coolers, or wine does not mean that it's the best option for you."

Luckily, Miss Pender was quite organized for her appointment with Stephen. She showed him reports and research studies she had highlighted that listed diverse drinking statistics and facts that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen a lot of data that applied particularly to adolescents.

After Miss Pender articulated the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse statistics and facts, it was obvious that what Miss Pender disclosed to Stephen was a real surprise to him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to go over the long term and the short term effects of alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction, but she also took the time to confirm what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction statistics and facts that related to everybody in general, and mainly to teenagers.

Undeniably, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen without pause grasped why he should not be engaging in excessive and abusive drinking with or without his peers anymore. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the information she presented and then accepted her reinstatement into school.
